It can be hard to get where you are going without a map. Getting your home ready for sale is no different.
Here is a quick checklist to tell you what home buyers have come to expect when looking at potential homes.
Keep in mind these are just suggestions. Every home is unique and may require different tips to get it looking its best.

Inside Your Home
Floors
- Hardwood/tile washed and swept
- Carpets washed and vacuumed
- Area rugs clean and appropriately placed
Walls and Ceilings
- Holes, nicks or damage should be patched and painted
- Walls clean and bright
Doors
- Free of fingerprints or other marks and spots
- Open and close properly
- New hardware can help for a more updated, uniform look
Windows
- Clean and crack free
- Open and close easily
- Latches and handles work properly
Window Coverings
- Freshly washed or steamed
- Replaced if stained or sun damaged
- Open and close easily
Lighting
- All light bulbs are working
- Switches are working properly
- Table and floor lamps working properly
Furniture
- Cleaned, dusted and free of any pet hair
- Excess or broken furniture removed to open up space
Surfaces/Countertops/Appliances
- Kitchen and bathroom surfaces are sparkling clean
- Appliances are clean and shinny
- Countertops are clean and organized
- Personal items removed from countertops
Declutter/Storage
- Entryways and hallways are clutter free without obstructions
- Closets are well organized
- Shelves and cupboards are neat and organized
- Basement and other storage areas is neatly stacked
Artwork
- Personal photographs and artwork removed and replaced with neutral artwork
Outside Your Home
Structures
- Front door is clean, in good condition and welcoming
- Eavestroughs and downspouts are in good repair
- Gates open and close properly
- Fences and decks are in good repair
- Driveway is clean and in good repair
Yard and Landscaping
- Driveway, pathways and sidewalks are clear of snow, ice or other obstacles
- Lawn mowed/edged, Flower beds tidy
- Lawn furniture clean, organized and well placed
- Bicycles, children's toys and yard equipment neatly put away
- Pet areas free of any "waste"
- Junk or scrap removed from the property
